The Philosophy of Modern Song PDF

The philosophy of modern song pdf by Bob Dylan: It’s Bob Dylan’s first new book since 2004’s Chronicles: and after winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016. This is less a rigorous study of craft than a series of rhapsodic observations on what gives great songs their power to fascinate us.

It’s a pleasure to read from start to finish with 60 essays about songs/performers/source material/Bob that veers off-topic for this or that and much more. It’s not a book about Bob Dylan, but you’ll come away from it with a greater appreciation for the unusual as well as the more famous songs by other artists (and perhaps some new insights you may or may not agree with) about them. Covers The Who, Elvis Costello, and many more. If nothing else, then you’ll spend hours and days searching for said songs and listening to some really great music.

The book is good, if uneven. To begin with, there’s no introduction and the reader ends up with the text immediately after the cover, with no commentary on the purpose or structure of what’s to come, not a word other than the bare list of songs. There are small sections, “riffs” as they were called during the book’s lengthy promotion, consisting of a very loose mini-essay before each song, always too vague or general, never actually introducing the song.

After each “riff,” Dylan analyzes the song, sometimes focusing on the singer, sometimes on other aspects: the lyrics, the performance of the song, or something else. Often the song title seems to be the occasion for Dylan to write on various topics, with one very intriguing one about marriage and two very funny ones about lawyers and Las Vegas.

Both the “riffs” and the actual song reviews vary in length, with some being only two paragraphs long and others three pages. The lyrics are close to confusing as many are very abstract. In general, the reader will think that the songs analyzed are those that defined the author – but it is impossible to be sure. There is no clear center in the analysis.
